Tuggeranong is situated approximately 24 kilometres to the south of the central business district of Canberra. The focal point of the district, Tuggeranong Town Centre overlooks Lake Tuggeranong and the surrounding area encompasses the suburbs of Banks, Bonython, Calwell, Chisholm, Conder, Fadden, Gilmore, Gordon, Gowrie, Greenway, Hume, Isabella Plains, Kambah, Macarthur, Monash, Oxley, Richardson, Theodore, and Wanniassa.

Tuggeranong is one of the five satellite cities that make up the ACT. The other locations include Canberra North and South, Gungahlin, Woden, and Belconnen.

The District of Tuggeranong is one of the original eighteen districts of the Australian Capital Territory and comprises nineteen suburbs and occupies 117 square kilometres (45 sq mi) to the east of the Murrumbidgee River. Located on Lake Tuggeranong, Tuggeranong Town Centre services the southernmost Canberra district of Tuggeranong and is composed of a large two-story mall, the Tuggeranong Hyperdome, as well as a smaller shopping complex, the Homeworld, and many other buildings and shops.

The name Tuggeranong is derived from a Ngunnawal expression meaning 'cold place'.
